Q&A: Rod recommendation for trip to Amazon

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

"This fall I have a trip planned to the Amazon(Suriname) to fish for the big catfish species there. The two targets will be Piraiba which can get well over 200lbs and redtails which can get just above a 100lb. I've never attempted to catch fish this big. So far I plan on bringing a Talica 25 and an Avet HXW raptor. My guide told me to use at least 125-150lb braid on them due to the various structure and snags in the river. Looking at forums for big offshore fishing your company pops up a lot on the threads. I wanted to see if you could help me with some good rod selections for my trip. Thanks for your time."

"I recommend 7'3" Black Hole Challenger Bank 731H rod, or 8' Black Hole Cape Cod Special Graphite or Nano popping rod. If you want a short rod, I recommend 5'2" black Hole Cape Cod Special 450g Jigging rod."
